How is color?

Most major people are familiar with the fact that sunlight can be broken with the help of a glass prism into the colors of the rainbow (see figure). Sunlight, or weßes light is a combination of the spectral colors, which we perceive as white light.

This applies to many sources of light, not only for the sunlight. We call the range of colors in the sunlight which can be split, the "visible spectrum".

If one can see in a Materiel color, such as a colored diamond, it means that the light coming from the object has been modified by the object itself. Choose one or more of the colors in the original "white light" are present, have been eliminated in some way. Therefore the light emerging from the object light is a combination of the remaining colors.

For example, if a diamond absorb those wavelengths of light that represent violet and blue, so so exiting the diamond light is a combination of green, yellow, orange and red, which the human eye perceives as a yellow diamond.

If an object absorbs a large part of the light of one color, the object appears as a rule in its complementary color: A tomato absorbs a large part of the green light, it appears red to the human eye.

But why most diamonds are colorless, but some yellow or pink? What makes a diamond color? If a diamond modifies the light it absorbs usually a part of the visible spectrum. Many types of chemical elements, compounds and structures can cause a light absorption in a material. Many precious stones get their color e.g. smallest by metallic impurities of the Periodic Table of Elements. Ruby and emerald get their color from chromium, amethyst, peridot and garnet red by iron, however.

Is the diamond is an exception, since its colors are not caused by metallic impurities. The colors of diamonds are often caused by nitrogen. Nitrogen is unusual as a contaminant in other gemstones. But also defects in the crystal structure of a diamond can result color can.

While the cause of the color in a gem of a similar color can trigger in another gem, none of the reasons for the color in diamonds directly applied to other gemstones.
