Cullinan

The Cullinan was the largest uncut diamond ever found with a weight of 3,106 ct. He was born on 26 January 1905 discovered in the Premier Mine in South Africa by Frederick Wells. He received 10,000, - $ for his find. The diamond was named after the mine owner Sir Thomas Cullinan. A general in the former British colony gave the stone 1907, King Edward VII on his birthday.

The diamond was sent to the Asscher Brothers in Amsterdam for processing that have been honed to Excelsior successfully. They appraised the stone several months. On 10 February 1908 attempted to Joseph Asscher, the first division of the diamonds perform. But the splitting tool broke while the diamond remained intact. In his second attempt he split the diamonds as planned. It is said that Asscher fainted after the successful second cleavage. Joseph Asscher split the rough diamond into three parts: In 105 individual stones, including small nine major and 96. 9.5 ct. remained uncut diamonds. The nine large diamonds were cut and to crown jewels are kept in the Tower of London.
